Pelican Wire was named the winner of the 25th annual Southwest Florida Blue Chip Community Business Award at this year’s luncheon and awards ceremony. Chosen by an independent panel of judges, the criteria is centered around overcoming adversity to achieve success.
The narrative submitted for the award centralized around the death of Pelican Wire founder, Larry Bill, and how his wife, son and work family gathered the resources to fulfill a man’s dying wish to turn the company over to employee ownership. Accomplished during the Great Recession, when funding was scarce and manufacturing slow, Pelican Wire has forged ahead through the past decade and grown through acquisition and product development.
Ted Bill, Pelican Wire CEO and son of founder, Larry Bill, says “Just as there is no doubt my Father would be so proud to see his company be one hundred percent employee-owned, he would certainly be doubly-honored to receive an award as prestigious as the Southwest Florida Blue Chip Community Business Award. He loved Southwest Florida before he even moved here, and we continue to be proud global ambassadors of our little corner of the world.”
Finalists included Blue Diamond Jewelers, Golden Gate Nursery & Sod, LCM Engineering and Purely You Spa. Each organization was recognized as a finalist at the awards ceremony and their stories of triumph over adversity were shared with those in attendance. The keynote speaker was Kevin Pearce, former Olympic snowboarder who survived a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and told the story of his training accident and recovery.
